8ID Beefs Up with 122 Newly Enlisted Soldiers

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar –A total of 122 newly enlisted personnel join the ranks of the 8^th Infantry Division today at 9am in a symbolic ceremony that was held at the Camp Lukban Grandstand. The highlight of the affair was the ceremonial entrustment of firearms to the soldiers by representatives from both the public and private sector notable among which is Honourable Mel Senen Sarmiento, Representative of First District of Samar. The entrustment ceremony symbolizes the critical role of civilian authority in the performance of the soldier’s duty.

In a statement made by Major General Mario Chan, chief of the Army in Eastern Visayas, the primary duty of the new soldiers is to be instruments for peace and development.

“With these reasonable force that adds to the 8ID troopers, rest assure that our people can expect more than what we are doing for the sake of peace and development in this part of the country,” General Chan says.

Likewise, Congressman Sarmiento said in his message that the soldiers of 8^th Infantry Division have continuously manifested devotion to duty and to the Constitution.

“With these soldiers, I am optimistic that our problems against insurgency will surely come to an end by doing each and every one of us their part and protecting the human rights of the people for the ultimate attainment of peace not only in Samar but also in the whole region,” says Congressman Sarmiento.

The activity was also graced by the Vice Mayor of Catbalogan Hon. Art Gabon, City Councilor Hon. Stephanie Tan-Uy, Calbayog Bishop Most Rev. Isabelo Abarquez, and Rev. Fr. Dionesio Calderon. Two civilian volunteer communications groups namely the REACT and KABALIKAT Civicom complemented the affair along relatives and friends of new soldiers. ###

8ID inter-color sport fest

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The 8^th Infantry Division, Philippine Army opened the 23^rd 8ID Founding Anniversary Inter Color Sport Fest 2011 held at 8ID Grandstand with Major General Mario F Chan, Commander, 8ID, as the keynote speaker during the ceremony.

The soldiers coming from the different units of 8ID together with the Team Navy participated the event. Right after the opening ceremony they started the games and played according to team color.

In his message, Maj Gen Chan urged all soldiers to participate the games in playing different games in order to more improve their competency. By focusing their mind, they will to learn the Army’s core competencies.

Through this activity, the camaraderie among soldiers will be strengthened and the spirit of sportsmanship will also be ingrained in their minds.

Road project in Samar blasted with UN-banned landmines to hurt 8ID troops

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – Headquarters-bound troops who recently performed as area security in support of the ground breaking ceremony for the Gandara-Matuguinao road development project held yesterday were harassed at about 11:30 p.m. last night along the way by a communist-inspired criminal group at the vicinity of Barangay Canligues and Concepcion, both of Paranas, Samar.

Two UN-banned landmines usually employed by the communist-inspired criminal group detonated along the road that caused the death of one soldier, the wounding of six others, and damage to a portion of a currently developed road. The wounded soldiers were immediately evacuated and are now under treatment at Saint Paul’s Hospital in Tacloban City. Responding troops in the area are now making sure that the traffic along the route will not be hampered because of the incident.

The incident is an expected reaction of the communist-inspired criminal group against the efforts of the 8^th Infantry Division who has committed to support road development and other related projects in the Region at all cost. The road where the incident occurred is among the roads that the 8ID supports for development. ###

Gandara-Matuguinao Road Project Ground breaking ceremony

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City –After conceptualizing Gandara-Matuguinao Road Project, the simple yet meaningful Ground Breaking Ceremony was held at Brgy. Canhumawid, Gandara Samar at around 10:30 this morning.

This road rehabilitation is part of the project proposals of the Command to the different Local Chief Executives pushed thru the Regional Development Council, Regional Peace and Office Council and Provincial Peace and Order Council. The project is a 3.7 km road rehabilitation to be undertaken by 546^th Engineering Construction Battalion, 53^rd Engineering Brigade costing about 2.1 million funded by the Provincial Government of Samar. The ceremony was spearheaded by the Commander of 8^th Infantry Division Major General Mario F Chan together with Honorable Governor Sharee Ann T Delos Santos, Most Rev. Isabelo Abarquez, Bishop of Calbayog Diocese; Rev. Fr. Erwin Rodriguez, Parish Priest of Matuguinao; Police Senior Superintendent Ronald Cortiz Macapagal, the Provincial Director of Samar; Commanding Officer of 801 Brigade Commander Colonel Romeo Labrador other military officers, local officials and media personnel were present to witness the realization of the road project that will be completed by 26 September 2011. Right after the ceremony, the activity was culminated with press conference.

“Hindi sa pamamagitan ng bala matatapos ang insurhensiya sa Samar, matatapos natin to sa pagbibigay ng tulay, maayos na daan at iba pang infrastraktura para matugunan ang pangunahing pangangailangan ng mamamayan ng Samar” Major General Chan says.

Meanwhile, Governor Delos Santos expressed her gratitude to the Commanding General of 8ID and encouraged the people of Gandara and Matuguinao to be responsible in order to achieve peace and order in the area.###

Top performing battalion refresh

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City –After serving the people of Eastern Samar, the 14^th Infantry Battalion under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Hermilo Demafiles held their opening ceremony for their scheduled retraining at Brgy. Erenas, San Jorge, Western Samar at 11:20 this morning.

The ceremony was spearheaded by the Commander of 8^th Infantry Division Major General Mario F Chan together with the government officials of the Municipal of San Jorge, Samar headed by Mayor Nancy B Grey as Guest. The purpose of this retraining is to improve the combat capability of unit, enhance the skills of the soldiers and refurbish the units personnel strength, signal, mobility and firepower capabilities. While the Battalion has been the top performer in the whole Philippine Army the retraining will serve as time for relaxation and reinvigorates in time for the units more crucial mission after the retraining.

Mayor Grey expressed her warm welcome to the 14IB and extended her whole hearted support for the retraining of the battalion. She also guaranteed the commitment for a harmonious relationship with the government troops in serving the people in Samar.

Major General Chan stressed that the 14IB is composed of well-disciplined soldiers. “Good manners and right conduct is emphasized and they will not do stupid things in the area of Samar. Everybody is disciplined” Chan says. He is optimistic that after the Battalion retraining of the unit, they will provide the “winning blows” in our quest for a just and lasting peace in the region. ###

43rd Infantry Battalion Back to Samar

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City –After three years stay in Lanao Del Sur the troops of the 43^rd Infantry Battalion arrived at pier 2 of Catbalogan City yesterday. The soldiers of the 8^th Infantry (Storm troopers) Division joint welcomed their arrivals and also a send off ceremony was held for the troops of 3^rd Scout Ranger Company and 1^st Light Armor Platoon.

The occasion was headed by the commanding officer of the 8ID Major General Mario F Chan together with City Councilor Hon. Stephanie Uy as the Guest of Honour. Hon. Uy expressed her warm welcome to the 43IB under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Madarang and subsequently extended her deepest gratitude to the departing troops of 3SRC and 1LAP for their excellent performance in serving the people of Region 8.

“Be guided with the maxim that as soldiers we are here to serve and not to be served” says MGEN Chan. With additional troops from Lanao del Sur, the 8ID is more than enough to continue its mandated mission.

On the other hand, several families and friends of the soldiers sympathized on the occasion and conveyed their gratefulness for the coming back of 43IB in Samar Island.###

In his message, Vice-Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Reynaldo B Mapagu, the Guest of Honor and Speaker expressed his sympathy to the dependents of the fallen soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

He stressed that the government intends to provide at least a decent dwelling aside from the Special Financial Assistance (SFA) for the families of soldiers who died serving the Filipino nation. Likewise he talks on generating more housing projects for soldiers in active military service.

“I am delighted that this 80-unit housing project is finally turned over to the beneficiaries here in Mindanao area. I know, no one wants to have these houses if only to take the lives of their loved ones away from them. But I urge everyone to take good care of these houses and consider it as existing testimony of our soldiers’ heroism.”, General Mapagu deliberately stressed.

8ID sustains effort on Gandara-Matuguinao Road Project

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – Yesterday, a lunch meeting attended by different stakeholders of Samar held at the Ciriaco Hotel, Calbayog City to discuss the Incoming Ground Breaking Ceremony of the Gandara to Matuguinao road project.

The gathering was initiated by the 8^th Infantry Division Commander Major General Mario F Chan, together with his Assistant Division Commander Colonel Virgilio M Espeneli and colleagues Colonel Peñafiel commander of the 34^th Infantry Battalion, Colonel Quila of the 546^th Engineering Battalion, and Police Senior Superintendent Arnold C Macapagal. Other participants from SIPPAD, DPWH, and the Media in the person of Ms. Emy Bonifacio, District Engineer Virgilio Eduarte, and Ms. Gina Ragudo of Samar news respectively, were also present.

The purpose of the gathering is to ensure proper coordination and participation of all the stakeholders in Samar necessary for the realization of the Road Project. Soldiers extends life to a nurse

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City – Yesterday, Commander of 8^th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division Major General Mario F Chan received an appreciation letter from a Registered Nurse Juniel Bardelas Tagarino, 24 years old.

Juniel Tagarino is presently working as Clinical Instructor in Samar State University-College of Nursing. He had been inflicted dengue fever last 22 June this year that in direly needs for blood transfusion with four (4) units of A+ Blood Type as well as blood donors. Patient had difficulty in looking for his blood type donors. Along with, one of his friend suggested to ask assistance at 8ID training unit for there were students undergoing training in the unit at present.

Immediately, 8ID acted on the need patient and look for soldiers capable of donating blood as blood type donors. Trainees from RRT Class 74-11 namely SSg Eleuterio Besada and Sgt Regie Milan volunteered themselves as blood donors. Blood type were successfully been transfused to the registered nurse without complications.

Registered Nurse is now in normal condition. “I am now feeling well, and for the lending hand that the Philippine Army has extended to me would always be in my deep gratitude to them because without this people who volunteered themselves to help others, I would not be living this life up to this time” Tagarino said. I was astound that my vision towards the Philippine Army was wrong that they might not help me because I am not a soldier but in the circumstances, it only shows that the Army organization is always there to help their fellowmen even the civilian like me, and I am honored and privileged to be one of the recipient of this helping hand that they’ve shown the people” he adds

As Bayanihan continues, the government troops will uphold in protecting and helping the Samareño in one way to another. The army’s of 8^th infantry division is willing to give a helping hand.

SND and other GRP’s top official bids honor to the fallen soldiers in Northern Samar

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The Secretary to the Defense Department and four (4) other government’s top officials landed today in Catarman, Northern Samar to visit the wake of the ten (10) soldiers who were treacherously waylaid by the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) in the outskirts of Brgy Perez, Las Navas town last 14 December two days before the government’s declaration for cease fire.

Secretary Voltaire Gazmin of the Defense Department is being accompanied by Secretary Teresita Quintos Deles of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP); Atty Alexander Padilla, the Chief Negotiator of the GRP Peace Panel; AFP Chief General Ricardo David; Army Chief Lieutenant General Arturo Ortiz to personally condole the bereaved families of victims of the most recent atrocity perpetrated by the terrorist NPA in Eastern Visayas.

The visiting government officials were welcomed at the Catarman Airport by Governor Paul Daza of Northern Samar and Major General Mario Chan and Colonel Oscar Lopez, the commander of the 8th Infantry Division and 803rd Infantry Brigade, respectively.

It can be recalled that troops were marching off “back to barracks” to observe the government’s declaration of suspension of military operations (SOMO) for the Yuletide season when the terrorist NPA ambushed them using destructive improvised mines. As a result, two (2) soldiers were seriously wounded and ten (10) others were brutally killed. One innocent minor Joven Cabe was also murdered who was just swimming in the river banks after hitting shrapnel from the exploded mine.

Gazmin and other top officials paid their last honor to the fallen comrades who rendered the supreme sacrifice of offering their lives for the sake of peace, freedom and democracy. They also gave due recognition to the wounded troops confined at Northern Samar Provincial Hospital who miraculously survived in the brutal massacre perpetrated by the terrorist NPA.

Meanwhile, different human rights advocates have already started condemning the CPP-NPA-NDF with their consistent violation of the terrorist human rights and international humanitarian law.

Some groups who are greatly dismayed with how the terrorist advances their so called revolutionary struggles are now calling out for mobilization to stand firm against these terrorist in support to the lamentation of the bereaved families of the fallen soldiers.

The remains of the ten (10) gallant men of the Army’s 63rd Infantry Battalion lie in state at St Francis Chapel, Camp Sumoroy, Brgy Dalakit, Catarman, Northern Samar.

“These soldiers died a glorious death for God, country and people. They fought it out to the last and they have won over evil. They have won in protecting you… For you to continue enjoying the fruit of democracy and freedom,” says Major General Chan.

He further call upon the Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) that monitors the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) to look after the incident and let the culprits be charged with the full force of the law as deemed necessary to include all other CARHRIHL violations of the CPP-NPA-NDF.

The human rights groups in Northern Samar also call to translate our silence to a loud voice of support to the heroism of these soldiers and of all of the victims of the NPA’s human rights violation. They are also calling to denounce and condemn the CPP-NPA-NDF and to make a firm stand for the sake of our children and our children’s children. ###

8ID: ‘NDF is not sincere for peace talk’

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The recent pronouncement of the National Democratic Front’s (NDF) demand for peace talk is a mere ploy to advance their offensives against the government.

With the newest atrocity perpetrated by the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) in Eastern Visayas, it shows that CPP-NPA-NDF upsurges their expert uses of lies and propaganda to steal glory against the people and the state.

In Leyte province, troops of the Army’s 19th Infantry Battalion on board two (2) vehicles on their way to their camp to adhere to the suspension of military operations (SOMO) were fired upon by the undetermined number of communist terrorist somewhere in Brgy Candigahob, Carigara town, around 9 p.m. last night. Fortunately, no one was reported hurt in the incident.

In Northern Samar, around 3 p.m. yesterday in the boundary of Brgys Sta. Fe and Perez all of Las Navas town, undetermined number of rebels waylaid the withdrawing troops who are supposed to “back to barracks” to observe the government’s declaration of SOMO for the Yuletide seasons and to give-way the desire of the NDF for peace-talk.

The rebels used destructive improvised mines to assure of the fatality of the troops. Two (2) soldiers were reported wounded and ten (10) others were killed. One innocent minor Joven Cabe was also reported murdered who was just swimming in the river banks.

The 8th Infantry Division’s leadership was dismayed with how the rebels take advantage with the command’s abidance of the peace mechanisms being orchestrated in the higher level. It only shows their true intention why peace talk is once again brought out of the picture.

Major General Mario Chan, 8ID’s chief condemns in the strongest possible terms the insincerity of the CPP-NPA-NDF in their demand to engage in peace talk. He also condemns the persistent violation of the terrorist NPA on human rights and international humanitarian law.

“Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) which is both signed by the NDF and our government is totally abused and disrespected. Serious violation of our people’s rights is deemed condemnable in the strongest possible terms,” declares Major General Chan.

It can also be recalled just recently in Las Navas, a pumped boat load of troops with civilians who will attend the Brgy Peace and Order Council (BPOC) of Poponton was mercilessly attacked by these terrorists that resulted to the killing of two (2) civilians including one minor Edwin Gudcad and wounding two (2) others. These were already condemned by the people both locally and internationally.

“I keep on challenging the different human rights advocates who keep on roaring over the violation of people’s rights to condemn this upsurge of human rights violation. Now that they are vulgarly exposed their true colors, my question remain still. Why don’t you bark once more and condemn these brutal godless monsters that mercilessly attacked the defenseless people? Prove now that you are really for the human rights of the people, and not for the rights of these terrorists,” says General Chan.

Major General Chan also said that the Army units in the area will remain committed in their mandate to continuously uphold the Constitutional thrusts despite insincerity of the other party. The 8ID thru their field units is now conducting constant coordination with the PNP to run after the perpetrators and let them face the charges bounded by the law.

“This incident would not make our desire to stop insurgency in the province for the benefit of our people, instead we will continue to pursue these terrorists until finally put an end on their violence,” Chan adds.

“We salute the heroism paid for by our troops who rendered the supreme sacrifice of offering their lives for the true spirit of service, peace and democracy. We bestowed upon them the highest regards that the Armed Forces as well as the people can be best confer. Although it is always sad in our part, our deepest condolences to the love ones left by our comrades-in-arms”” vows General Chan. ###

Government troops find another NPA camp

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – Operating elements of 63rd Infantry Battalion discovered an NPA camp at vicinity of Brgy. Bagacay, Palapag, Northern Samar at about 1:00 pm. December 10, 2010.

Lieutenant Colonel Joel Paloma, 63IB commander acted on a report volunteered by the local populace that fully armed CTs are conducting extortion activities in the area. Upon receiving the complaint, he immediately deployed his troops and afterward discovered NPA camp in the outskirt of the barangay that can accommodate more or less 70 Communists Terrorists (CTs) with forty (40) makeshift bunkers, with one (1) comfort room and it has three (3) kitchens.

Base on the data of 8ID, 48 encampments were already discovered by the government troops since August this year. One of this is the main camp of Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) and that of National Organization Department (NOD) of the Centarl Committee of the CPP that were discovered in the tri boundaries of three (3) provinces of Samar Island.

According to Major General Mario F Chan, 8ID’s chief, the discovery of said camp is a product of information provided by the local populace who are against the CTs’ harassment, extortion and human rights violations, a clear manifestation that they desire peace and stability in their area.

The government troops still scouring the vicinity to track down the CTs possible location or in areas where they shift as they evade confrontation with the government troops.###

14IB discovers NPA’s war materiel cache

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – Various war materiel owned by the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) were recovered by the elements of the Army’s 14th Infantry Battalion in the boundary of Maslog, Eastern Samar and Las Navas, Northern Samar late morning of December 7.

Reports disclosed that the enemy’s war items were safely kept in a concealed haven in the said area that was just revealed through a tip from a knowledgeable civilians.

Recovered items were two (2) improvised landmine, two (2) rifle grenades, three (3) blasting caps, 31 rounds of ammo for K3 (linked), voluminous subversive documents, hand outs in making improvised explosive devices (IED), stethoscope and blood pressure apparatus which are believed to have been kept following the successive discovery/seizure of various enemy camps in Samar by the government troops.

Said items are still in the possession of the operating troops and are being transported to their headquarters for proper disposition.

Still in Northern Samar, two (2) civilians were killed and two also were wounded following a brutal and merciless ambush perpetrated by the terrorist NPA in the periphery of Brgy. Taylor, Las Navas.

Wounded civilian was immediately evacuated to Catubig District Hospital for immediate treatment prior to evacuation to Catarman Provincial Hospital for more intensive medication. Wounded civilian is now under appropriate medication as of press time.

Troops of 63rd and 87th Infantry Battalions and the 3rd Scout Rangers Company are already conducting pursuit operations in order to track down the fleeing terrorists.

63IB is also preparing all of the necessary documents and witnesses for filing of legal charges against the terrorists involved in the said ambush of innocent civilians.

The incident is another NPA’s violation on the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRHIL) for targeting unarmed and innocent civilians as what they considered as soft targets.

“This is a total violation of our people’s right and must be condemned in a strongest possible term. This must be looked after by our human rights advocates and sue these terrorist who vehement pursue their bloody ideology. This is the time to work hand in hand against these terrorist. All of us should be united. If we will remain working solitarily against these insurgents, we’ll just allow them to blemish the precious rights of our people,” General Chan says. ###

8ID REMAINS APOLITICAL

Camp General Vicente Lukban: In response to an article written by one Gina Dean-Ragudo published in Samar News.com on 18 November 2010 . In her article, the author wrote the following allegations against personnel and units of the Command: First is against 2LT Eduardo Mendoza of 34th Infantry Battalion under this Command for distributing unsigned letters forcing barangay captains of Paranas, Samar to attend a meeting in Barangay Calapi, Motiong, Samar. Allegedly, the said unsigned letter was expressly directing the said barangay captains to attend an orientation seminar on Integrated Territorial Defense Security System (ITDSS) and to witness some talks initiated by officials of the province on development projects of the barangay to be given by Congresswoman Milagrosa Tan; Second is about the name of Sgt Romeo Paldez also of 34IB who was also maliciously dragged in again distributing the unsigned letters forcing the barangay captains and SK officials of San Jose de Buan, Samar to attend a similar activity; and Lastly, Ms Gina Dean-Ragudo also indicted certain SSg Guillermo Daga of 52IB of allegedly exerted his influence over some CAFGUs and threatened them to be relieved from duty by transferring them to another area if they refuse to support their SK and ABC candidates in the upcoming elections.

In response to the said article, the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division, Philippine Army strongly denies all the allegations as written by the author. MGen Mario F Chan, the Commander of the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division, Philippine Army in his firm statement stated that: “Under my watch, the 8ID remains apolitical and steadfast in its mandate of eradicating the insurgency problem in the area of operations particularly in Samar and Leyte islands to achieve genuine peace and development”.

The 8th Infantry Division has various programs and activities aimed to uplift the well-being of the people in the areas being entrusted to our care. These programs and activities include the Army Literacy Patrol System or ALPS, a national winner of the Literacy Program of the Department of Education benefiting the out-of-school youths and adults illiterates; various medical and dental civic action activities for indigents; Public information Patrol or information awareness among the populace; and the Integrated Territorial Defense Security System (ITDSS) for the barangay populace, among others. These programs and activities are being undertaken in coordination with different stakeholders such as the LGUs, LGAs, NGOs, POs, CSOs, Local Chief Executives irrespective of their political affiliations having that common end of rendering service to our people.

On the allegation of the author, she in fact stated that the alleged letter with the name of 2LT Mendoza that was distributed to the different barangay officials forcibly directing them to attend the ITDSS orientation seminar is unsigned. That being the case, the said letter is in itself an unofficial document that could have been done or made by somebody or anybody with the intention of maligning the 34IB as an organization. While the ITDSS is considered as one of the programs of 34IB, the unit implements it through the spirit of volunteerism by not forcing anybody’s involvement in it if it is against their will and belief. However, since the said program that is aimed to safeguard the barangay from the intrusion of terroristic groups was being conceptualized in the spirit of a bayanihan system that solicit the support of other stakeholders to make it fully work as a system. On the other hand, the alleged involvement of Sgt Romeo Paldez also of 34IB, LTC WILLIAM PENAFIEL JR, the Commanding Officer of the said unit also denies the involvement of his men in any political undertaking. According to him, there is no meeting or assembly related to ITDSS that took place in San Jose de Buan. The headquarters of 34IB is in the heart of San Jose de Buan municipality and if there is any activity related to the programs of 34IB, being the Commander, he is the first one to know. On the allegation that SSg Guillermo Daga of 52IB exerted his influence over some CAFGUs and threatened them to be relieved from duty by transferring them to another area if they refuse to support their SK and ABC candidates in the upcoming elections, is again baseless and unfounded. A mere SSg who is only acting in his capacity as a detachment commander, could not in any manner influence the relief of a CAFGU from his duty considering that CAFGUs are geographical forces aimed to render service in their own locality as prescribed by AFP. Also, the relief of a certain CAFGU from his post or a termination from his duties requires a process and approval from higher headquarters.

While the 8ID stands firm of isolating itself as an organization in politics, it is also a Command policy to get rid of its members who in any manner, committed any acts prejudicial to good order. While we also appreciate the efforts of our friends from the media, we are also calling on them to refrain from publishing such an article that could tarnish the good image of the military as an organization. If indeed they have any legitimate concerns or complaints on the actuations or any infractions committed by our troops, they could present it to us. We will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation on that. We will not tolerate any wrongdoings of our personnel and we assure the people that we are here to serve them, not for the interest of any individuals or groups.

Major General Chan further stressed in his statement, “We have nothing to do with politics. Our business is peace and order of Samar Island. Anyone who will go against peace and order will be subject of our actions as we implement the rule of law. Let us therefore be vigilant and continue to work hand and hand to achieve a genuine peace and ultimately development for the people of this area”. The good General concluded.

802nd Infantry Brigade meets new commander

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The Army’s 802nd Infantry Brigade met its new commander after a humble yet meaningful change of command ceremony that was held in their headquarters in Carmen, Bohol today.

It was presided by no less than the commander of the 8th Infantry Division, Major General Mario Chan which was also witnessed by the top brasses of the Army in Eastern Visayas and friends from different agencies and stakeholders such as Congressman Aumentado, Governor Chato and the Municipal Mayor of Carmen, Bohol.

After almost two (2) years of driving the successes of his brigade against the insurgents in Bohol and Cebu provinces, Brigadier General Alan Luga who will be assuming a higher post and responsibility in the Armed Forces satisfactorily relinquished his commandership to his successor, Colonel John Bonafos.

It was during the stint of Brigadier General Luga as commander of the said brigade when Internal Security Operations (ISO) responsibility in Bohol, Cebu and Biliran provinces were handed over to their respective Peace and Order Councils (POC).

On the other hand, Colonel Bonafos was not new in the area as he was one amongst those who gave their share of ISO accomplishments in Bohol being the former commanding officer of 15IB and the former deputy brigade commander of 302nd Infantry Brigade based in Bohol.

In his assumption speech, he said that, as a new commander of 802nd Brigade, he will focus his efforts to sustain the peace that reigns in Bohol and to prevent the re-incursion of the Communist Terrorists (CTs) to the provinces declared as insurgent free already.

Meanwhile, Major General Chan thanked Brigadier General Luga for his remarkable accomplishments that brought change of lives to the people in the area. He also congratulated General Luga for a job well done.

He likewise expressed his appreciation to the local leaders of the province such as Congressman Aumentado, Governor Chato and the municipal mayors for spearheading the fight against the insurgents.

“The success in Bohol is a classic example on winning against the CPP-NPA having the LCEs on the lead in the partnership with the Army,” General Chan concludes. ###

Government troops discover another NPA camp

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – Operating elements of 3rd Scout Ranger Company discovered an NPA camp at vicinity Brgy. Rufino, Las Navas, Northern Samar at about 1:30 p.m. December 3, Friday

Accordingly, troops received information coming from concerned citizen regarding the presence of armed men in their locality. Troops immediately acted on the information received thru text message and discovered NPA camp that can accommodate more or less 20 Communist Terrorists (CTs) with ten (10) makeshift hut bunkers, two (2) post and it has a water point at its vicinity with early warning devices installed in its periphery.

It can be recalled, from August to date, 38 encampments of the CTs were already discovered by the government troops. One of this is the main camp of Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) and that of the National Organization Department (NOD) of the Central Committee of the CPP that were discovered in the tri boundaries of three (3) provinces of Samar Island.

Colonel Oscar Lopez, the commanding officer of the Army’s 803rd Infantry Brigade based at Catarman, Northern Samar disclosed that the occupants of the newly discovered camp was planning to conduct sniping and ambuscades to the operating troops of the government.

Meanwhile, Major Mario F Chan, 8ID’s chief extended his appreciation to the local folks for the timely information that resulted to the discovery of said camp applauded his men for a job well done.

He also said that, with the continues support of our people, we will soon achieve the long deprive peace and development in Region 8.###

8ID starts month-long Christmas celebration

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan Samar – The 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division, Philippine Army formally kicked off the month-long celebration for the Christmas season with

a ceremonial switch-on of Christmas lights held in front of its Headquarters building here.

The switch-on ceremony, preceded by a Christmas lantern contest was witnessed by civilian guests, military personnel, civilian employees, military dependents and other civilian personalities from Catbalogan.

In a simple program Dr. Dominador Q Cabangon, Ph.D., one of the judges in the lantern contest, in his message, saluted the 8ID for the good work and acknowledged the Command’s

continuing effort of rendering service to the people of Samar Province. He expressed his feelings of delight seeing the craf

tsmanship of the stormtroopers as evidenced by the c

olorful lantern entries made of indigenous materials.

He also, appreciated the

8ID’s unique way of observing the Yuletide Season through the ceremonial switching of christmas lights that illuminated the entire 8ID Headquarters Building and its peripheries.

Major General Mario F Chan, commander of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division said that the switch-on of Christmas lights is just one of the activities lined up for the month-long Christmas celebration.

s to promote sports development, camaraderie, esprit-de-corps and sportsmanship among the military

personnel and a variety show during the stormtroopers night. The activity will be highlighted by raffle

presentation while the 8ID choirs with Stormtroopers Band sings Christmas carols to the delight of the audience.

This is the 8ID’s way of celebrating the Christmas season, as the Command believes that spirit of Christmas should be enjoyed and cherished by all peace-loving Filipino citizens of the country.

8ID troops apprehend NPA regular member

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – As a result of pursuit operations conducted by the troops of Alpha Company of the 8ID’s 87th Infantry Battalion in the hinterlands of Northern Samar, one (1) regular member of the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) was apprehended at Brgy Osmeña, Las Navas, Northern Samar at around 1: 32 p.m., November 29.

The CT member was identified as Domingo Hinandoy alias Ninoy, a full time guerilla member. Hinandoy revealed that he had participated in a series of combat activities, like ambush in Jipapad and Gamay of Eastern Samar and Northern Samar, respectively and a squad member of alias Jessie (true name unknown) an identified recruiter at Sinunugan de Tubang, Sivino Lobos, Northern Samar. He also named some personalities belonging to his squad.

In a report made by Lieutenant Colonel Leo Lorenzo Madroñal, commanding officer of 87IB disclosed that the unit acted upon a report text by the local populace regarding a band of CT’s conducting extortion activities in their area.

Meanwhile, Major General Mario Chan, chief of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division commended the soldiers for a job well done. He likewise extends his thanks to the people of Brgy Osmeña, Las Navas of Northern Samar for the information that was timely provided to the soldiers.

“If these cooperation from civil society will continue, we can easily defeat or totally eradicate the insurgents that hampered our peace and development here in Eastern Visayas”, Major General Chan adds.

As of press time, Hinandoy is undergoing custodial debriefing at the Headquarters of 87IB for further filing of appropriate charges.###

Civilian tips foiled CTs plan of collecting food stuffs!

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – the troops of Alpha Company of 87th Infantry battalion under 1st Lt. Taguinay L Agoy while acting on the reported presence of armed Communist Terrorists as reported by civilians through a text message, encountered more or less eight CTs one kilometer from the village on November 29, 2010 at 1:32 p.m. Accordingly, the said communist terrorists’ presence in the area was for the purpose of collecting food stuffs from the populace as scheduled. The said encounter happened while the troops were conducting combat and clearing operations at vicinity Brgy. Osmeña, Las Navas, Northern Samar

Fire fight ensued for about five minutes, after which the CTs scampered to different directions dragging with them their wounded members. No one was hurt on the government side.

The encounter is a product of a timely information provided by the local populace who are against the CTs’ harassment and extortion, a clear manifestation that they desire peace and stability in their area.

Earlier on the same day, elements of Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion under 2nd. Lt. Glenn De Ramos while conducting combat operation discovered an abandoned camp of New People’s Army at Brgy Anagasi, Paranas Samar on November 29, 2010 at about 7:28 a.m.

Said abandoned camp has two halls (bulwagan) and has 80 bunkers that can accommodate more or less 80 Communist Terrorists (CTs).

According to Lt. Col. William Peñafiel, 34IB’s commanding officer the abandoned camp could be an alternate camp established before by Regional Guerilla Unit of Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) operating in the area that they utilized in case of discovery of their main camp.

The troops of 34IB and 87IB are currently conducting pursuit operations against the fleeing terrorists.

Lt. Gen. Arthuro B Ortiz, Commanding General, Philippine Army sent a congratulatory message to Maj. Gen. Chan of this result. Similarly, Major General Mario F Chan, 8ID chief, commended the troops for timely responding to the report from the concerned civilians. He also extends his appreciation to the people of Samar for their support and cooperation given to the operating units of 8ID by pointing out the exact locations of the CTs operating in the area. ###

8ID Apprehends member of Private Armed Group

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan Samar – Army troopers from the 52IB of Purog detachment headed by Ssg Paras apprehended a certain Reynaldo Derio alias Noknok believed to be a member of Private Armed Group (PAG) of unknown political leader at Brgy Bocawe, Gandara, Samar on November 28, 2010 at 3:00 a.m.

Guided by information from concerned citizen of the said barangay, the Army troops conducted strike operations in the area of Brgy Bocawe, Gandara, Samar that resulted to the apprehension of Derio and the recovery of one AR 15 Colt M653 Cal 5.56, and one Colt Combat Commander Cal.45 pistol

The campaign against Private Armed Groups is one of the current efforts of the 8ID following the directive from President Benigno Aquino to get rid of these groups that threaten the security situation in the AOR. Through the support of the local folks in providing timely and accurate information and the enhanced coordination between the Army and the civilian populace in the area, 52IB had succeeded in the said operation. The massive information drives conducted by the 8ID have immensely enlightened the people of Samar, on their roles in our security efforts that have made them our significant partner in our thrust to eliminate the lawless elements and communist terrorists to include Private Armed Groups.

Maj. Gen. Mario F Chan, the 8th Infantry Division Chief commended the concerned soldiers and CAA’s of 52nd Infantry Battalion for a job well done of protecting the people, and likewise expressed his gratitude to the people of Samar for their wholehearted support to the intensified security operations that the Army is currently undertaking.###

NPA’s militia squeals his buddies, one shotgun seized

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – One (1) homemade shotgun was seized by the members of the Army’s 3rd Scout Ranger Company from New People’s Army’s (NPA) militia following a tip from his former buddy at Sitio Inuman, Brgy Tagabiran, Las Navas town in the province of Northern Samar around 5:20 p.m. of November 22.

Based on the report, the troops were conducting security operations in the area to preempt the possible entry of the fleeing terrorists from Pinipisakan Falls when they intercepted a certain Antonio Tan, 19 years old who resides in the mentioned barrio due to his suspicious actuation.

Tan after being interviewed by the troops revealed his connection in the underground movement and that he identified 37 other names of his companion in their barrio and in Brgy Sag-od same town.

The troops immediately paid attention to Tan’s revelation and visited the persons named by Tan where they captured a homemade shotgun under the possession of certain Santiago Lim, also a resident of Brgy Tagabiran.

Tan and Lim were later turned-over in good condition to Leah Danque, Brgy Chairwoman of the mentioned barrio for legal concerns. Troops are now making coordination with the Northern Samar Provincial Police Office (NSPPO) for filing of appropriate charges against the duo.

Meanwhile, at around 4:50 p.m. yesterday, 8ID’s 82nd Division Reconnaissance Company encountered undetermined number of NPA in the periphery of Brgy Canlobo, Pinabacdao, Samar following the tip of a forester. Exchange of fires ensued for five (5) minutes after which the enemy fled.

No one was reported hurt in the side of the government while still undetermined in the enemy side except that bloodstains splotched in the area of encounter were evident.

The troops are continuously scouring the area to track down the fleeing terrorist to immediately bring the possibly wounded foe to the nearest medical facility for medication.

In his statement, Major General Mario Chan, 8ID’s commander expressed his great appreciation for the continuous support of the people around. He said that the success of our efforts in winning the peace could be possible with the support of our people even with the people directly connected with them.

“I would also like to appreciate our people who exert more effort just to contribute with our aspirations. I just want to reiterate my former pronouncement. Despite of gaining grounds against the terrorist, I am deeply saddened every time I hear stories that another life has to be sacrificed,” says Major General Chan.

The Division’s intensified combat operations will continue for those who remain adversative to our Constitution. But for those who really wanted to promote the true spirit of democracy we are more than willing to give you a second chance for the sake of peace and democracy,” concludes General Chan. ###

8ID discovers two more terrorist’s camp

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar - The Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion discovered two (2) abandoned camp of the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Anagasi, Paranas, Samar around 2:45 in the afternoon, November 19.

In a report from Lieutenant Colonel William Penafiel Jr, commanding offficer of the 34IB, his troops was conducting security operations when an undisclosed resident of the mentioned barangay tipped off that an enemy haven can be found almost adjacent to their barangay.

When the troops proceeded to the area mentioned by the said civilian, an enemy abandoned encampment was found which can accommodate around 20 CTs. It was assessed to have been abandoned for a month already.

On the other hand, separate troops under the same battalion discovered another abandoned enemy encampment at Barangay Caguisipan, Catbalogan, Samar same time.

The camp has an abundant water source that can accommodate15 rebels believed to have been abandoned also for a month.

In his assessment, Lieutenant Colonel Peňafiel said the abandoned encampments projects that the terrorist in the area could no longer establish their safe havens due to the continue and intensified operations being launched by the Division.

“34th Infantry Battalion is continuously and seriously doing its job to protect and defend the people and the state as mandated by the people and the constitution. Samarnon can enjoy the freedom, peace and free from atrocities of CPP/NPA/NDF,” Lieutenant Colonel Peňafiel says.

He further said that with this development, the people of Samar will soon enjoy the freedom and democracy that they’ve longing for years.

Meanwhile, Major General Mario Chan, Commander of 8th Infantry Division lauded his troops for a job well done and assured the people that the 8ID will continue to protect the people of Samar and whole of Region 8. ###

Civilian tips repel NPA attack against government forces

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The 52nd Cadre Battalion’s 33rd Western Samar CAFGU Active Auxiliary Company in Poblacion, Motiong, Samar was attempted to harass by the unidentified number of New People’s Army (NPA) around 9:50 p.m. yesterday, November 22.

According to report that reached to this headquarters, the NPA’s attack failed due to the early warning provided by the residents in the area.

The NPA was armed by assorted high powered firearms when they attempted to take over the camp and the fire fight just lasted for 10 minutes because the enemy sensed the readiness of the soldiers and CAAs manning the camp.

No one was reported hurt in the side of the government forces while on the enemy side, it is still being determined as of press time.

Meanwhile, Major General Chan, 8ID’s commander commended the troops of Motiong detachment for successfully defending their post and thwarting the enemy attack. According to Major General Chan, “Such gallant feat of our troops is a clear manifestation of their dedication to duty in poretecting the people against the threat groups that will sow terror to the peace loving Samarenos”.

He said that another NPA plan was thwarted due to the unwavering support of our people. It only proves that insurgency could not be totally expunged by a mere military solution. It needs a thorough collaboration between the civilians and the soldiers.

“As I was saying, this feat can be attributed to our people. Our services can be fully carried out if our people also show concern, not just for our soldiers, but for themselves too,” he says.

Troops were already sent out to pursue the fleeing communist terrorists and make them face the legal charges and the full force of the law.

With the standing call of General Chan to the rebels to lay down their arms and return to the mainstream society to re-experience the genuine democracy, he further said that the 8ID is very much firmed to sue those who do not show intention to cooperate with the government and keep on staging chaos to the people.

“Our people are already tired of waiting their long desired peace and development in the region. Even they are voluntarily giving their share to lessen the burden of our government to fast track this insurgency problem that mocks the decent living condition of our people. And now that they keep on showing their ardent desire for peace, the 8ID assures them with a remarkable services for the sake of peace, prosperity and eventually development in Region 8 ,” vows General Chan. ###

Terrorist NPA attacks unarmed soldiers one hurt and killing another

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) operating in the province of Northern Samar attacked unarmed soldiers while enjoying their off duty swimming and washing clothes in the famous, “Pinipisakan Falls” in Brgy. San Isidro, Las Navas town late morning yesterday, November 22.

Based on the report reaching this headquarters from the commanding officer of the Army’s 63rd Infantry Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Joel Paloma, Technical Sergeant Edgardo Tahum and Sergeant Rennie Solis both members of 6th Field Artillery Battery were in their admin time washing their dirty clothes with five (5) innocent young people when fully armed terrorists opened fire at them.

Tahum was hit at his right knee and left foot and was later brought to HANJIN clinic for first aid treatment then rushed to Northern Samar Provincial Hospital for appropriate medication. Solis was unfortunately hit on his head that caused his instantaneous and untimely death while the five young people displaced the area covered with morbid fear and still in state of shock as of press time.

Pinipisikan Falls, a tourist destination in Northern Samar is about 300 meters away from the proper of Brgy San Isidro and about 21 km away from Las Navas. With the combined effort of the civilians in the area and the troops of 63IB, Solis’ body was recovered and brought to the 63IB’s headquarters in Opong, town of Catubig for proper disposition. Relatives are already informed about the incident.

Meanwhile, the commander 8ID Major General Mario Chan strongly condemns in the strongest possible terms the newest blatant violation of the terrorist NPA on human rights and international humanitarian law.

“These soldiers are not armed during that time and had no capacity to engage any armed confrontation. The act perpetrated by these terrorist is a clear manifestation of ill-respect to the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), a total abuse of our people’s right that is deemed condemnable in the strongest possible terms,” declares Major General Chan.

“I challenge now the different human rights advocates who keep on barking over the violation of human rights to come into the open and eventually condemn this undoubtedly upsurge of human rights violation. Why don’t you bark once more and condemn these brutal godless monsters that mercilessly attacked the defenceless troops? Prove now that you are really for the human rights of the people, and not for the rights of these terrorists,” says General Chan.

“I am also appealing to our peace loving people to work hand-in-hand with the authorities to include media entities and various religious and people’s organization to take account our moral obligations to maintain harmony in the province. Let us all be united to condemn the drastic and brutal violation of our people’s right, not just for our own sake, but for our children and their children,” says General Chan.

Major General Chan also said that the attack made by the terrorist against unarmed soldiers is nothing but their desperate move to retaliate against the successive successful feat of the 8ID for the past few weeks particularly in the tri-boundary areas of the Samar provinces where the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) main camp fell in the hands of the government and assorted high powered firearms, war materiel, explosive materials, medical supplies & equipment, communications equipment, subversive documents and other high valued equipment and personal belongings were recovered.

These hopeless moves of bringing front lies and propaganda as well as sabotaging and brutal killing are just used by the NPA to project their false strength to the people and pretend to be winning their barbaric cause.

“I understand that the reason why they are doing these deeds targeting the soft targets is to make us loosen the grip of our intensified combat operations in the area that gradually drains their resources. This incident would not make our desire to stop insurgency in the province for the benefit of our people, instead we will continue to pursue these terrorists until finally put an end on their violent,” Chan adds.

“I would like to recognize the heroism paid for by our comrade-in-arms who died in the true spirit of peace and democracy. The highest regards of our people and our Armed Forces will be bestowed upon him. Although sad to note, my deepest condolences to the love ones left by Sgt Solis,” vows General Chan. ###

8ID recognizes new breed of soldiers, CSO entrusts firearms

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – 333 new Privates of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division faced the people from all walks of life who witnessed their graduation rites in the hollow ground of the Division Headquarters, yesterday morning, November 16.

Parents, relatives, friends and people from different sector, young and old assembled around the ground not wasting their opportunity to witness such a historic event where their love one is involved.

Everyone fulfilled their expectation as they saw the graduating class march, execute rifles and performs traditional Filipino martial arts and self-defense pose almost perfectly. The heavy downpour of rains in the midst of the program did not stop the parade even when the 8ID marching band demonstrated their exhibition that fully added colors to the activity. Spectators bid satisfaction to their faces as the band completed their show with a pass-in-review.

Significant to the activity is the ceremonial entrustment of firearms to the newly enlisted privates done by the representatives from the people of all walks of life. It was spearheaded by Vice Governor Ma. Mimeatta Bagulayan of Leyte representing Governor Jericho Petilla, as the ceremony’s guest of honor and speaker.

Farmers, vendors, fisher folk, nurse, doctor, student, parents, lawyer, NGO, GO and media were some of the few who made themselves available to entrust fire arms to the soldiers. This symbolizes that these people entrust their protection of rights, security and safety to the soldiers whom their primary duties and responsibility is to defend the constitution.

In a statement made by Major General Mario Chan, chief of the Army in Eastern Visayas, he said that the new breed of soldiers will be an additional force to secure the people of Region 8 against the people who vehemently destroy and violate our people’s rights.

“With the additional forces, the 8ID will surely perform its tasks of protecting our people’s right against the rebels who violently destroy its sanctity. With these reasonable forces that adds to the 8ID troopers, rest assure that our people can expect more than what we are doing for the sake of peace and development in this part of the country,” General Chan says.

Meanwhile, Vice Governor Bangulayan said in her message that the men and women of the 8th Infantry Division have continuously contributed devotion to duty according to constitution.

"With these additional forces to the 8ID, I am optimistic that our problems against insurgency will surely come into end. That’s why all members of the society, government and non-government agencies should give their share for the ultimate attainment of peace not only in Samar but also in Leyte provinces,” says Vice Governor Bangulayan.

In the end, the ceremonial entrustment to the newly enlisted privates gave more hope for the people of Region 8 to once again re-experience the peaceful environment that they long experienced before the advent of the terrorist communist in their provinces.###

8ID overruns another terrorist camp,

recovers high powered firearms

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – a week after the successful encounter of the 8th Infantry Division’s 20th IB that resulted to the recovery of high powered firearms, another feat had marked the Division’s ISO campaign when 14IB successfully overran New People’s Army’s (NPA) camp in the hinterland of Sitio Sapia, Brgy. Magsaysay, Mac Arthur, Eastern Samar around 1:25 this afternoon.

Report reaching this headquarters form Lieutenant Colonel Hermilo Demafiles, 14IB’s commanding officer disclosed that the troops under First Lieutenant Dagpin were conducting a security patrol when an undisclosed civilian approached and informed them on the presence of armed men allegedly seen in the aforesaid place.

Lieutenant Dagpin diverted their routes towards the mentioned area where they intercept around 30 armed terrorists under certain Gavino Guarino alias Mael that immediately resulted to a firefight. Exchange of fires ensued for about 30 minutes before the rebels fled away towards Sitio Carbon, Brgy. Huknan, Hiporlos of same province after suffering heavy casualty leaving their camp in a disastrous situation.

Captured in the area of encounter are three (3) M16 rifles of the fallen terrorists, M14 rifle’s bolt assembly, pair of M16 rifles hand guard, 10 backpacks, assorted magazines of M16 and M14 rifles with live ammos, personal belongings and voluminous subversive document with significant value. No one was reported hurt on the side of the government.

Meanwhile, Major General Mario Chan, 8ID’s commander commended collaborative effort of the civilians to the soldiers.

“The success of our campaign could not be possible without the support of our people whom we are serving. While I am congratulating my troops with their sacrifices, I would also like to appreciate our people who exert more effort just to contribute with our aspirations. Though we are gaining grounds against the terrorist, I am also saddened to note that somebody’s life has to be sacrificed,” says Major General Chan.

He further said that with the continuous conduct of the Division’s combat operations especially with the unwavering support of the people to thwart the enemy in the area, the terrorists today has no where to hide.

Moreover, General Chan reiterated his previous call to the members of the underground movement to lay down their arms and re-embrace the genuine spirit of freedom and democracy for the sake of the succeeding generations.

“I once again call upon our brothers and sisters, whom I considered victims of Communist’s deceptive ploy to embrace the governments means to re-integrate to our mainstream society to avoid the unnecessary lost of lives being brought by these armed confrontations. Our government is very much willing to give them a second chance for the sake of peace and democracy,” concludes General Chan.

Lieutenant General Arturo Ortiz and Lieutenant General Ralph Villanueva, Philippine Army’s Commanding General and Commander of Central Command, respectively has already conveyed their deep satisfaction to the 8ID troopers for consistently bringing forth success of addressing the threat groups towards the road to peace and development in Region 8. ###

Two more rebels embrace 8ID’s call to surrender

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – With the standing call of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division to the terrorists New People’s Army (NPA) to lay down their arms and return to the mainstream society to re-experience the genuine democracy, two (2) more rebels operating in the hinterlands of Northern Samar voluntarily gave up their futile ideology in the morning of October 28, 2010.

Alias Noli and alias Speed whose identity are still undisclosed as of press time while custodial debriefing is being conducted revealed to be brothers and both residing in Brgy. Balud, Silvino Lobos town.

In an initial report from the 8ID’s 803rd Infantry Brigade, Noli and Speed are both under the leadership of a certain alias “Pruding” of Northern Samar Provincial Party Committee (NSPPC).

The duo also revealed that the NSPPC is now experiencing unstable operations because of the impact of the recent major engagement transpired between 8ID troopers and their groups all around the Samar Island.

It can be recalled that weeks ago, enemy main camp and numbers of encampments and safe houses fell in the hands of the 8ID troopers following the intensified combat operations including the recovery of assorted high powered fire arms, war materiel caches, piles of food stuffs, medical paraphernalia, personal belongings, subversive document and other materials that greatly impacted their underground operations in the distant barrios.

Meanwhile, Major General Mario Chan, 8ID’s commander expressed his appreciation to Mayor Edmund Guillamac of Silvino Lobos who also shared his great effort for the surrender of the said rebels. He further acknowledges the good partnership of local government with the Army for common good of the people.

Furthermore, Major General Chan reiterates his call to the members of the underground movement to lay down their arms and reintegrate to the mainstream society. He once again emphasized that he is more than happy to see these people peacefully reaching their arms to the government for the sake of freedom and democracy than through a bloody resort of struggles.

“As vanguard for peace and democracy in Eastern Visayas, we assure our people to have a peaceful sleep at night, away from harm and a part from danger of the NPAs who sow terror in expense of power. Your 8ID will continue to intensify its operations for you to celebrate Christmas even the fruitful welcoming of the new year to come”, vows General Chan. ###

Troops of 83DRC encounters CTs

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – Troops of 83rd Division Reconnaissance Company encountered more or less five communist terrorists at the vicinity of Brgy Pagsanghan, Paranas, Samar this morning at 10:45 am.

Report reaching this headquarters disclosed that while the troops under Lt Escolano conducting combat operation in the said area encountered more or less five fully armed communist terrorists at the vicinity of Brgy Pagsanghan, Paranas, Samar. Said fireflight lasted 20 minutes after which the enemy withdrew towards northwest direction.

Troops recovered in the said encounter three “taffeta” jogging pants and three T-shirts with no casualty on government side while undetermined on the enemy side.

Major General Mario Chan lauded his troops for exerting every effort and dedicating their lives in the accomplishment of their task.

Meanwhile, Commander of 8th Infantry Division Philippine Army assured that the 8ID will continue to assist the PNP to prevent any violence happen and keep on searching fully armed communist terrorist roaming around for this coming local election. ###

Government troops, encountered communists terrorists

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion encountered more or less 10 armed members of the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) at the vicinity of barangays Anagasi, Paranas Samar yesterday, October 21, 2020 around 1:40 a.m.

Report reaching this headquarters from 34IB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. William Penafiel revealed that while his troops were conducting combat operation they encountered communists terrorists within the area of said barangay. Fireflight lasted for about 10 mins after which the enemy withdrew towards different directions.

With the desire to defeat the enemy and to protect the civilians, elements of 34IB conducted pursuit operation and encountered again more or less 20 communists terrorists 100 meters away from the first encounter site, fireflight lasted for about 15 mins. after which the enemy scampered in different directions within the periphery of said barangay.

There were no casualties among government troops during the encounter, however, the blood stains on the encounter site and along the enemy’s route of withdrawal clearly indicate that a few of the NPA’s were wounded during the encounter. The troops were also able to recover a camouflage backpack containing personal belongings and subversive documents.

Lt. Col. William Peñafiel, 34IB’s commanding officer commended the troops and directed them to to continue scouring the area.

Meanwhile, Major General Mario Chan, the 8ID’s head, expressed his appreciation for a job well done. ###

8ID joins the 66th commemoration of the Leyte Gulf Landings

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – As its annual dedication in the name of freedom and democracy, the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division once again joined the people of Eastern Visayas in the 66th commemoration of the Leyte Gulf Landings yesterday, October 20 at Mc Arthur Park, Palo City bearing the theme: “Passing on the torch of heroism to the Youth of today”.

As early as 4:00 a.m., the troops were already positioned in the “unknown heroes” monument for the “Sunrise Ceremony” where retired Colonel Francisco San Miguel, the vice president of the Veterans of the Philippines, other dignitaries and veterans lay wreath to salute the unknown soldiers of Leyte who fought for the country during the Japanese occupation in the country.

They were then repositioned on the grounds of Mc Arthur Park to carry out historic task for the activity. Around 10, 000 spectators from all walks of life including some foreign personalities witnessed the activity. Living WWII veterans and their relatives who became the center of the activity add light with the annual commemoration.

Meanwhile, the troops steadfastly endured the strong heat of the sun as they wait for the highlight of the program. Around 9 o’clock in the morning, when the program started with the arrival of Under Secretary Samuel Bagasin of the Department of National Defense as the commemoration speaker.

No less than the commander of 8ID, Major General Mario Chan hosted the arrival of USec Bagasin with a full military honor.

The activity has renewed the spirit of nationalism for everyone when the Philippine flag was raised and the Philippine National anthem is being played that spearheaded the raising of flags and playing of the other nation’s national anthem such as the Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and United States. These countries played important role when WWII erupted in the country.

The wreath laying ceremony to the heroes memorial, participated by the representatives of the aforesaid countries took place immediately after the national anthems had been played.

In the messages given by the foreign representatives, they commonly focused their talks on the positive effect that the coming back of Mc Arthur had brought not only to the Philippines but also to the other nations. It cannot be denied by the fact that then two (2) opposing countries before such as Japan and USA are now frequently seen in union advocating peace-related endeavors.

This endeavor further inspires the people of Eastern Visayas to sooner achieve and re-experience the freedom and democracy that were given to us by our forefathers but vehemently deprived by the local terrorist group. With the huge numbers of people who witnessed the program, it also showed that people still lingers for a peaceful life not for a violent and barbaric cause as enforced by the New People’s Army (NPA) in the province.

The program was concluded by a grand parade headed by the 8ID contingents who tendered salute to the veterans of the country. A “Sunset Ceremony” was also tendered at the “Unknown Heroes” memorial statue to wrap up this year’s celebration of the Leyte Gulf Landing anniversary with the 8ID troop’s 21-gun salute and sounding of “TAPS” for our unknown heroes.###

Another high powered firearms recovered anew by 8ID troops in Samar

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The relentless conduct of pursuit operations by the troops of 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division, Philippine Army in the tri-boundary of Samar provinces resulted to an encounter in the early morning of October 6, 2010.

In a report by Lieutenant Colonel Joel Paloma, Commanding Officer of 63IB based in Barangay Opong, Catubig, Northern Samar, states that operating troops under 2lt. Mendez PA, received an information volunteered by a barangay resident that armed men believed to be CTs are resting at the forested area of Brgy Cagbanaba, Jipapad, Eastern Samar. The troops proceeded to the said area and caught the enemy by surprise. Firefight ensued for more or less ten minutes followed by a running gun battle that forced the enemy to withdraw towards different directions. The platoon scoured the area and recovered the following: two M16 armalite rifles, medical equipment, one solar charger, one solar florescent light, colored computer printer, five pieces ballast for florescent bulb, carpentry materials and subversive documents. The government troops suffered no casualty while undetermined on the enemy side.

The recent accomplishments by the 8ID troops against the NPAs in the area of Samar have disrupted their command and control and communication. The government troops has dislodged them from their guerilla camps and cut-off their supply support lines. The discovery and seizure of the earlier reported camps in heavy forested areas in the tri-boundary of Samar province was made possible by the information provided by local populace and is a clear indication that enemy revolutionary organization has already alienated the people and the communities where they got their support through their forced extortion activities.

Major General Mario F Chan, Chief of the 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army commended the soldiers for a job well done. Tips from Civilian Populace, Leads the Recovery of high powered firearms

Camp Lukban, Maulong Catbalogan Samar- The troops of Bravo Company, 34^th Infantry Battalion of the 8^th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, under 1Lt. Franchild Dusil while conducting security operations at Brgy Bahay, Sta. Margarita, Samar apprehended one person possessing high powered firearms this morning, October 4, 2010, at 5:30 am.

In a report from Lieutenant Colonel William P Penafiel Jr, Commanding Officer of the 34^th Infantry Battalion based in San Jose de Buan, Samar, while his troops were conducting security operations in pursuance to the COMELEC/AFP/PNP Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) against illegal possession of firearms, a civilian in the nearby barangays tipped in an information regarding presence of armed men in the area. As troops reacted on the report, they were able to apprehend a certain Emilio E. Casaljay, 31 years old, resident of Brgy. Monbon, Sta. Margarita Samar. Recovered from his possession are one M653 (baby armalite) with serial number 975565, seven magazines and 130 rounds of ammunition. Based on the coordination with the Samar PNP, the subject is an escapee form the provincial jail and has a standing warrant of arrest. Appropriate charges of illegal possession of firearms in connection with the COMELEC gun ban is now being filed against the subject. 1Lt. Dusil conducted dialogue to the populace of Brgy. Bahay, Sta Margarita Samar, expressing his thanks for their timely information leading to the apprehension of the said fugitive.

8ID hails 235 new breed of soldiers

Camp Lukban, Maulong Catbalogan Samar- The Army’s 8^th Infantry Division once again conducted a simple but meaningful closing ceremony of Jungle Warfare and Mountain Operation Course Class 02-2010 with Entrustment of FireArms Ceremony which was jointly graced by Maj. Gen Mario F Chan, Commander 8ID and Honorable Sharee Ann T. Delos Santos, Governor of Samar, as Keynote Speakers held at the 8ID grandstand this morning, at 9:00 am.

Said ceremony was witnessed by personalities from various Local Government Units and Agencies and Non Government Organizations, parents, relatives and friends of the newly enlisted Privates and different tri-media practitioners of Samar and Leyte.

Out of the original 250 Candidate Soldiers, only 239 have successfully completed the Candidate Soldier Course, six of them did not cope up with the rigors of the training.

The Candidate Soldier Course opened last May 13, 2010 with 250 qualified applicants from all walks of life that came from all over the country to undergo 3 months basic military training. After their basic training, they underwent Jungle Warfare and Mountain Operation Course (JWMOC) which has duration of six weeks.

During the ceremonial entrustment of firearms, Gov. Delos Santos presented the Firearms as a symbol of entrusting the Samareños to the new breed of soldiers as the guardians of peace and protectors of the people. The firearms that were accepted by the Privates will serve as their primary instrument in the performance of their tasks and signify their enduring commitment to the noble profession of arms.

On the other hand, Maj. Gen Mario F. Chan in his message, cited the ten rules of engagement which are; Obey legal orders of your lawful superiors, Wear snappy uniform, Speak politely, Respect women, children and the elderly, Pay for whatever you buy and return whatever you borrowed, Do not be arrogant, Do not destroy crops, Do not look or keep spoils of war for personal interests, Do not maltreat prisoners and Do not violate human rights, “I’ll be making sure that these guys will be the one to give us the energy in the 8^th Infantry Division in particular and, the Armed Forces in General. I assure you that I will lead them to their best and make them a true servants of the people whom their Parents who are here today can be proud of”, Gen Chan added.

1 NPA killed, 1 M16 rifle recovered

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar –Operating troops of Army’s 803^rd Infantry Brigade encountered more or less 30 members of the Communist Terrorist New Peoples’ Army (NPA) on September 18, at about 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon in the upstream barangays of Las Navas of Northern Samar and Matuguinao of Western Samar complex.

Report reaching this headquarters those troops of 803^rd Infantry Brigade led by 1lt Onipig while conducting security operation within the vicinity of the aforesaid area, a certain civilian resident gave an information about the presence of the armed men frequently seen in the outskirts of said area that caused fear to the civilian populace residing near within the area.

With the immediate response to the call of duty, troops under 1lt Onipig immediately proceeded to the alleged location of the terrorist and subsequently discovered an enemy encampment and encountered the armed group believed to be members of the NPA operating in the area.

No casualties reported on the government side while one terrorist killed and undetermined numbers of wounded as evidence of bloodstains in the route of enemy withdrawal. Recovered in the encounter site were one M16 armalite rifle, bandoleer and live ammunitions, voluminous subversive documents with high intelligence value and personal belongings of the terrorist at said encampment.

Meanwhile, Colonel Oscar Lopez, Commander of the 803^rd Infantry Brigade, based in Camp Sumoroy, Catarman Northern Samar, commended his troops for a job well done and to the undying performance to the call of duties as soldiers and guardians of peace.

On the other hand, Major General Mario F Chan, Commander of the 8^th Infantry Division based at Camp Lukban, Maulong Catbalogan, Samar, appreciated and give thanks to the continuous support of the civilian populace that brought the success not only to the “Stormtroopers” but for the Samareños as well.

He also gave a direct order to his soldiers to continue the effort in conducting Internal Security Operation in the area while observing the rights of the civilians and even the rights of the terrorists.

Civilian tips results encounter

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The Army’s 34^th Infantry Battalion encountered some 50 armed members of the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) in the boundaries of barangays Caranas and Hinacaan of Motiong, WSamar 5:00 a.m. this morning.

Report reaching this headquarters from 34IB disclosed that Corporal Michael Angel received a report from undisclosed civilian that armed men wearing tapita clothes are frequently seen loitering in the outskirts of said barangay. The presence of the said armed group, caused terror and uneasiness to the populace in the locality.

With the desire to address the threat brought by the said terror group and to defend the civilians, elements of 34IB conducted security patrols within the periphery of that barangay and its nearby sitios.

This resulted to an encounter between the troops and the enemy that resulted to the killing of one enemy and the recovery of a camouflage backpack and one (1) upper hand guard of M16 rifle.

One soldier was also reported to have been killed in the said encounter.

Lt. Col. William Peñafiel, 34IB’s commanding officer commended the heroism of his fallen troop and said that risking lives is just part and parcel of the military profession for the people to continuously enjoy their right to live.

“Soldiers never die, they just pass away. We will be surely missing him but his acts of courage and commitment to duty will always remain in the memories of the people he has served. We share in the sorrow felt by his family and loved ones and we will never forget his act of heroism and the invaluable contribution he made in service to our country and people”, says Lt. Col. Peñafiel.

Meanwhile, Major General Mario Chan, the 8ID’s head, expressed his appreciation to the concerned individuals and civilian who relentlessly supported the efforts of their Army to ultimately attain peace and development in the province.

He further directed the troops to continuously pursue the fleeing enemy in order to fully to liberate the area from the LTs influence that would pave the way for the attainment of the lasting peace and development. ###

8ID holds three major activities in one day

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – The Army’s 8^th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division graced three major activities in one day making the whole camp busy last Tuesday, March 16.

The command hosted the Samar Partnership for Peace and Development (SPPADE) first hour of the day which was attended by all member agencies and other invited sector to discuss and to receive reports pertaining to the peace and development of the province.

The group focused mainly on how to make the forthcoming national and local election more orderly as deemed necessary and came up with decision to host a forum to be attended by the local candidates any day prior to the Election Day in the spirit of peace.

On the later part of the morning, the closing ceremony of the Philippine Army Candidate Soldier Course “MATARIK” Class of 2010 took place wherein 105 new breed of soldiers were appointed into the rank of “Private” who are readily deployable to different units of the 8ID.

The ceremony was also attended by the parents and relatives of the graduating class who are as proud as the graduates.

Meanwhile, the 8ID’s busy day was concluded by the opening ceremony of their 1^st Semester Inter-Color Sports fest.

All officers, enlisted personnel and civilian employees as well as the members of the Philippine Navy who secure the shores of Samar and Leyte.

These activities all though tiring in their part became successful and meaningful.

Major General Arthur I Tabaquero, the commander of the 8ID made it possible to present himself and even delivered his words of welcome and encouragement to the respective activities.

“The 8ID family will always make balance of its work towards its mission accomplishment and upholding the troop’s morale”, Major General Tabaquero said stating the command’s activities from morning till dusk.

“Sometimes, we have to give time for sports and other recreational activities despite of rigid and hectic endeavor towards our mission in order to stretch a while and prepare ourselves for another succeeding days of work”, the good General added with a bit of smile on his face despite of tiring but successful day in his camp.

Barbaric NPA beheads Brgy. Captain

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City – “Evil strikes back!”, are few but angry words from the victim’s bereaved family referring to the New People’s Army (NPA) for slaying and beheading their head of the family at Brgy. Genaronagan, Lope de Vega, Northern Samar the other day.

Initial reports disclosed that Hon. Luis Durico, Brgy Chairman of the mentioned barangay was brutally killed by notorious NPA led by unidentified leader using assorted high powered fire arms while on his way going home from a barangay session meeting.

Not contented with their brutality, the victim’s dead body was dragged towards the center of barangay and with the presence of his family and constituents, was beheaded to sow terror with them.

It is also worthy to note that the victim was a former rebel and allegedly being re-recruited by his former comrade but never showed any interest after re-experiencing the social life in the full folds of the law. This is one of the reasons his constituents see why the terrorists finished their so called “father of barangay.”

It can be recalled that similar incident transpired at Brgy. Sta. Cruz, Matuguinao, Samar early this year when Arman Diaz of Brgy Madoroto, Matuginao, Samar was shot dead by five unidentified members of NPA and also dragged its dead body towards the center of barangay plaza to exhibit with the populace.

Moreover, a certain Ka Dayokdok, former rebel who returned to the mainstream society revealed that the former group he previously belongs was responsible for killing and beheading a 13 year old girl that was also exhibited in the masses of San Jose de Buan for suspecting to be providing reports to the military without further investigation.

This incident is no longer new in the underground movement since it was being condemned internationally for relentlessly violating human rights.

Who will forget their nationwide anti-DPA campaign dubbed as, “Oplan Kadena de Amor, Missing-Link, Ahos-Zombie, Purga, Paglilinis-hanay, etc.” as a result of their “Kangaroo Court” butchering thousands of innocent member-victim?

Who can’t recall the famous bloody “Digos Massacre” that came out to the public knowledge slaughtering even innocent children and beheading the UCCP pastor?

Roberto Gacuma a.k.a Ka Huling, the former top rank NPA official of Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) that was captured by the government forces sometime in 2007 has been exposing these un-Godly practices of his former comrades in most of his media interviews in order to warn those who are still being deceived by the local terrorist group.

The people of Samar are already crying for justice and seeking help to the human rights groups especially to the Katungod-Sinirangang Bisayas and other progressive groups, that still doing nothing up to press time.

“These un-Godly and barbaric acts of NPAs are no longer tolerable and must be given due attention”, cried out by his orphans.

Major General Arthur I Tabaquero, Commander 8ID said, “Let us remain steadfast in our effort to sustain peace and order in our province. Let us remain vigilant and cooperative to our different agency in order to knock down our perennial problem in the country the soonest possible time”

NPA rebel yields firearm re-experiences true democracy

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – Hardship, hunger, insecurity, false hope and discouragement are just some of the numerous reasons enunciated by the former rebel after he decided to voluntarily submit himself to one of the members of the Charlie Company of the Army’s 19^th Infantry Battalion, 12:30 P.M., Friday.

Reports disclosed that Lemy Oronuz, 23 years old, known to be Joshua in the underground movement belongs to Pingkoy Platoon of the Front Committee Leyte. He is a resident of Brgy. Oguesan, Mac Arthur, Leyte and stayed in the NPA organization for reasonable years.

According to Orunuz, he can no longer withstand with the torment that he and his comrades are experiencing in the underground movement to include their long awaited realization of the promises they received when they were recruited.

Orunuz also said that his other comrades are already showing their intention to follow his footsteps of going out into the open to re-experience the true democracy that was long deprived by the party and the movement.

He also added that they are being encouraged by the testimonies of their former comrades who already availed the government’s Social Integration Program (SIP) which further negated their belief in the lies that whoever will surrender will be killed by the military.

Orunuz voluntarily submitted himself to 19IB soldier bringing along his issued M16 rifle with three (3) long and three (3) short magazines loaded with live ammunitions.

With this development, 8ID Commander, Maj. Gen. Arthur I. Tabaquero assured Orunuz of his security while his name is immediately enrolled in the SIP program.

“I personally appreciated the right move and decision done by Lemy. He is still young and he can do more with his age and correct the wrong decision in the past and can still make his future brighter”, Maj. Gen. Tabaquero added.

“I reiterate my previous call to our brothers in the underground movement whom I considered victim, to follow the good decision done by Lemy and make their future more fruitful. I also enjoin other agencies, people’s organization, local government units and cause oriented and progressive groups to share their part in our advocacy to stop insurgency that serves as the sole reason why the province’s peace and development is at stake.” Maj. Gen. Tabaquero concluded.

Brgy. Officials recover two dead bodies in a shallow grave

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – Two (2) dead bodies were found by the brgy. Officials of Concepcion, Arteche, Eastern Samar buried in a shallow grave two days following an encounter that transpired between the terrorists and elements of Army’s 14^th Infantry Battalion in the forested area of Brgy. Dorillo, Jipapad same province.

Report disclosed that around 4:30 P.M. of February 14, while the platoon of Sgt Orosco was having their temporary patrol base in brgy. Concepcion, some brgy. Officials and tanod personally led by their Chairwoman Zedaria Pajares brought out two cadavers.Accordingly, an undisclosed folk discovered the said grave due to its strong foul scent that prompted Pajares to lead his constituents to identify and later on bury the bodies more decently.

Initial report revealed that the duo’s cause of death were gunshots base on the wounds that found all over their body.

One body suffered a wound at his right armpit while the other one is at his neck that believed to be the cause of their instant death. Official autopsy report is still being waited and the bodies’ identity is being uncovered as of press time.

It can be recalled that on the morning of February 12, troops under Staff Sergeant Pejana encountered some 10 terrorist NPAs at Brgy. Dorillo and reported that most of the rebels were wounded including the owners of their recovered M16 and M14 rifles.

This situation is no longer new to the underground movement that once their comrades were wounded in action, they drag it away from the troops and avoid it being caught for they are afraid that information can be elicited from their wounded comrades.

Lt. Col. Jaime Hidalgo, commander of 14IB already sent his troops to facilitate the burial and assist the doctors who examine the remains.

Meanwhile, the Commander of 8^th Infantry Division Maj. Gen. Arthur I Tabaquero expresses his heartfelt appreciation to the Brgy Officials who initiated the simple good deeds of bringing out the truth to the open.

“This simple deed is a clear manifestation of support to our advocacy of pursuing peace to achieve development in the whole region,” Said Tabaquero.

“I urge you to carry on your simple ways of supporting our government to encourage your fellow local officials to replicate same for us to ultimately attain our dreamt peace and development in this part of the country,” He added.

This successful feat against the terrorist NPA is the third time for this year following an encounter in Brgy. Rizal, Eastern Samar in January 13 and in Brgy Santander, Bobon, Northern in January 29 where two (2) M16 rifles, radios, war materiel, personal belongings and voluminous subversive documents with significant values were collectively recovered.

Moreover, Maj. Gen. Tabaquero calls upon the peace-loving Samarnon that should an incident occur that wounded NPAs were left in their possession by the fleeing terrorists, they should inform any nearest PNP or Army detachment to help them attend their medical needs.

“The 8ID will always be here to give these NPAs, wounded or not a chance to live freely and re-experience the fruit of democracy whenever they feel the desire to. We will give necessary medical attention the same treatment we give when we have our wounded soldiers for it is the right of the individual.” The good general concluded.

Three days after, two shallow grave sites were discovered by barangay folks 2kms away from the encounter site. The Brgy Officials of Brgy Conception headed by Byrg Kap Freddie Roncales and elements from 14IB responded on said report, together with Dr. Eduardo de Dios, MHO of Jipapad, ESamar who later conducted autopsy. The cadavers were identified as Elcon Liad (TN: Lilio Liad) @ Binal/Mila/Nilpo/Batoy and one known only as @Naval/Antoy Authorities confirmed that the duo were got killed during the earlier encounter with the elements of 14IB. Elcon Liad was further identified as the CO of Regional Security Force (RSF), EVRPC with code name: BANGKAW. Their remains were provided of decent burial at Public Cemetery of Brgy Conception, Arteche, ESamar.

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – Two (2) high powered firearms were recovered by troopers from Army’s 14^th Infantry Battalion in a forested side of Brgy. Dorillo, Jipapad town of Eastern Samar after a firefight against the members of the terrorist New People’s Army (NPA) 9 A.M this morning.

Report reaching to this headquarters disclosed that while the troops under Sgt. Jessesito Pejano conducts their regular security patrol, a civilian approached and informed them that some 10 armed groups were sighted not far distant from their present location.

The undisclosed civilian also said that these armed groups are the same group who regularly collects foodstuff and extort from them.

Accordingly, after assessing the information, Pejano led his troops towards the given location and there they confirmed the civilians tip.

Firefight between the two groups commenced and lasted for about 20 minutes after the terrorist group fled dragging along their wounded comrades.

The incident resulted to the wounding of two NPA rebels leaving along their respective firearms that were recovered by the troops during their clearing in the encounter site while no reported hurt in the side of the government forces.

An M16 rifle and an M14 rifle bearing the serial number 180888 and 1264373 respectively that was recovered in the encounter are now in the possession of the 14IB and are being turned-over to the higher unit after its inspection.

Lt. Col. Jaime Hidalgo, commander of 14IB said that a pursuit and blocking operations is on progress as of press time in order to track the fleeing terrorist and let them face various criminal charges against the innocent people.

Lt. Col. Hidalgo also calls the barangays immediately surrounding the encounter site to report any wounded person that may be sighted in their area to help them provide medical attention.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Arthur I. Tabaquero lauded the troops for the successful security operations. “While we continue to perform our mandated task of preserving peace and stability in the province, we are calling to our people to intensify their usual support extended to our government in the pursuit of peace stability for the ultimate attainment of development of the whole province.

Surviving descendant graces the 8ID’s wreath laying ceremony in honor of Gen. Vicente Lukban

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – The Army’s 8^th Infantry Division’s wreath laying ceremony in honor of Gen. Vicente Lukban yesterday morning was charmed by the surviving descendant Atty. Hubert Lucban who traveled all the way from Pambujan, Northern Samar just to add meaning with the celebration.

Atty. Lucban a practicing lawyer and the Clerk of Court in Lao-ang Municipal Trial Court traced his origin by citing some of the historical background of his great great grand father Gen. Lukban and gave his stories on why and how the Lucban is spelled either “c” or “k” in it.

He also mentioned in his eloquent speech how his great grand father became well known and greatest as he led the revolutionary in Samar and Leyte against the Americans to include one of the victorious feats of the Filipino-American war, the “Balangiga Massacre”.

Atty. Lucban conveyed his great appreciation to the men and women of the said division for giving due recognition and made the death of Gen. Lukban very significant not just because it carries the name of the late general but because of its contribution to the liberty and freedom of the province.

“I would like also to extend my sincerest gratitude for the heroism being demonstrated by the 8^th Infantry Division in performing their mission because in doing so, it just doing the same thing as the late Gen. Lukban did for this province”, he uttered.

The ceremony was also attended by all officers, enlisted men and women and civilian employees of the Division, members of the Mason Mount Huraw Lodge, Mayor Coefredo Uy of Catbalogan City and Barangay officials where the Division is nesting.

In his message read by Col. Alexander Cabales, the Assistant Division Commander of Administration, Gen. Arthur I. Tabaquero stressed out the heroism of the soldiers before that still being demonstrated by the present breed of soldiers. Gen. Tabaquero attended the internal security operations (ISO) of Bohol province to Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) during the said ceremony.

Gen. Tabaquero also encouraged his men to maintain the high standard of discipline and professionalism as they perform their mission particularly in the performance of their traditional role.

“By doing what we ought to do and by professing the spirit of duty and service, we can follow and revive the heroism that once showed by Gen. Lukban when he saw the first light in Samar and Leyte”, Gen. Tabaquero added.

Meanwhile, the said ceremony was the subsequent activity of the command following the “Unity fun run for honest, orderly and peaceful elections 2010” early morning at 5 which was hosted by the PNP.

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar – Some 500 warmed body of the Army’s 8^th Infantry Division shared their physical agility as they joined the unity fun run hosted by the Samar Provincial Police Office, 5 A.M. yesterday morning.

The fun run bearing the theme, “Takbo ng Pinagsamang Simbahan, Sandatahang Lakas, Pambansang Pulisya ng Pilipinas, Mga Mamamahayag at mga Mag-aaral para sa Malinis, Maayos at Mapayapang Halalan 2010” aimed to advocate a united call for impartial, honest, orderly and peaceful election comes May 2010.

As one of the mandates during election period especially when deputized by the COMELEC, the 8ID ensures that the right of our people to vote is preserved and carried out without any stain from the few who have their evil personal interest.

Together with the media, students, clergies, peoples’ organization, ROTC cadets, civil societies and PNP personnel, the 8ID troopers ran 3K, 1K and 500m respectively depending on their chosen categories that started at the SPPO grounds until 8ID Grandstand after series of rounds in the command’s oval where simple program and ceremonial signing of unity manifesto was conducted.

No less than the Chief PNP P/Dir. Jesus Verzosa commended the participation of the Stormtroopers in the said endeavor.

In the message of 8ID commander, Maj. Gen. Arthur I. Tabaquero which was delivered by his Assistant Division Commander Col. Joel Ibanez, he stressed the roles of different members of societies particularly the common people who are the potent element of attaining peace and honest electoral processes. Gen. Tabaquero attended the internal security operations (ISO) of Bohol province to Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) during the event.

He also ensures the public that the Stormtroopers, will continue to assist the PNP and COMELEC not only in this coming May 2010 elections but also in the future elections to come.

“As we exercise our rights to suffrage, your soldiers in Eastern Visayas will continue to safeguard its portion for the people to at least enjoy all the freedom embodied in our constitution.” He added. ###

Farmer slain by terrorist NPA

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City – an innocent farmer was slain by the members of the notorious New People’s Army (NPA) at Brgy. Sta. Cruz, Matuguinao, Samar 1P.M., yesterday.

Arman Diaz of legal age, married and a resident of the Brgy Madoroto of said town was shot dead by five unidentified members of NPA using assorted high powered fire arms while he was in his farm place. Victim suffered gunshot wounds all over his body that caused his instantaneous death.

Based on the reports of the Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion, the victim was mercilessly slain in front of his children and wife. After the killing, the dead body of Diaz was allegedly dragged and emplaced at the center of barangay plaza to exhibit with the populace. The residents disclosed that the victim is known for being hushed and hard-working in upbringing his family and remember nothing to pay with the underground movement.

The people of Matuguinao particularly the victim’s family are calling to the human rights groups especially to the Katungod-Sinirangang Bisayas to give due attention to the barbaric, un-Godly and violent killing perpetrated by the terrorists. They also call on to the Katungod-SB to conduct investigation to give justice to the victim.
“Election Day is fast approaching. This is perhaps one of their means to sow terror to the masses in order to create chaos and destruct the rights of the people to vote and choose a candidate of their choice”. Exposed by Roberto Gacuma a.k.a Ka Huling in his most interviews. Ka Huling is a former top rank NPA official of Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) that was captured by the government forces sometime in 2007.

Meanwhile, PNP Matuguinao is now conducting necessary investigation to give justice to the victim. The 34IB under Lt. Col. Jose B Gongona immediately conducts pursuit and security operations in the area to go after the perpetrators.

One terrorist killed, one soldier wounded in a clash

A terrorist NPA was killed and two others were wounded following an encounter transpired between the members of the Army’s 20^th Infantry Battalion and the terrorist group after responding to the civilian tip that some armed rebels are collecting foodstuff and extorting money to the local folks of barangay Santander, Bobon, Northern Samar yesterday morning.

The encounter transpired at around 10 in the morning when the troops of Lt. Florencio Tayo responded to the tips of the civilians.

Meanwhile, an M16 rifle, two handheld radios at various subversive documents were left and recovered by the pursuing troops in the area of encounter after about 10 minutes of firefight.

Initial information reveals that upon approaching of the troops under Lt. Tayo the said terrorist group immediately fired upon unto them the initiated the firefight between the groups.

One soldier was slightly wounded, Sgt Floro Lozano who was immediately air-evacuated and now in a stable condition at Camp Lukban Station Hospital.

It is also believed that more wounded rebels were dragged by their comrades towards their secured places as evident in their route of withdrawals. This was confirmed by some of the local folks who personally saw some withdrawing rebels.

This incident is another proof that our localities can no longer stand with the terrorist’s different modes of sourcing out support in order to sustain their existence. With this, the 20IB thru their commander, Lt. Col. Jose Narciso continued their pursuit operations in order to track down with the fleeing rebels and let them face charges against the law.

One rebel slain in encounter

CATBALCOGAN CITY- One NPA bandit was killed and two were wounded while a government trooper was slightly injured in an encounter in a remote village in Oras, Eastern Samar Wednesday at around 7:00 O’clock in the morning.

Lt. Colonel Armand Rico, Chief DPAO, 8th Infantry Division, based in Catbalogan City, said that the wounded soldier, identified as Pfc Ramon Estico, is now in stable condition and recuperating.

The said encounter, the first in the area for this year, took place in sitio Tugop, Barangay Rizal, some 26 kms away from the town proper.

Lt. Col. Rico said that one of the 10 rebels belonging to SECOM, North East, Eastern Samar Provincial Party Committee, Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee was killed while two others sustained injuries during the 30 minutes firefight that also resulted in the government troops from the 14th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Antonio Dayag recovering one M16 rifle bearing serial number: 135108, one rifle grenade, two back packs, one bandoler, three with full of ammunition, medical kit, one detonating cord with blasting cap, and personal belongings.

“The wounded rebels were dragged by their escaping comrades”, the information officer of the 8th ID said.

“Our soldiers, under Lt. Antonio Dayag, were in the area as part of their community work”, Rico said.

Major General Arthur Tabaquero, commanding general of the division, immediately directed for the troops of the 14th IB, under Lt. Col. Jaime Hidalgo, to hunt down the rebels and intensify security operations in the area.

Alleged failure of military and PNP to protect civilians: an unfair statement

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan, Samar – Failure of military and PNP to protect civilians as quoted from Sen. Chiz Escudero’s statement in his interview over the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) which was published as “Top Story” in a December 4-10 issue of Bullhorn newspaper is an unfair sweeping statement.

Said statement was aired relative to the issue of Maguindanao massacre wherein the Ampatuans are accused of killing almost 60 people including some of the local media practitioners.

Bullhorn’s title carrier, “Military and PNP failed to protect civilians” in their early December issue is misleading and irresponsible considering that Sen. Escudero was only referring to Maguindanao.

The AFP as always is focused on its mandated task of protecting the lives and even the properties of the people. As professional organization, proofs were already been noted in its various traditional and non-traditional role of performing its mandate.

The incident in Maguindanao could not be blamed against the AFP. Although it was one of the most brutal election-related atrocities ever recorded, it was an isolated instance that should not be compared to other areas where peace is dominated thru the AFP. Moreover, the incident is politically-motivated.

Sen. Escudero is right when he said, “If you are not a soldier or personnel in uniform, you have no business carrying a gun” because no civilian must possess any kind of firearms without proper authority. The AFP is firm to implement such especially to terrorist-infested areas.

In Eastern Visayas and in other areas covered by the 8th Infantry Division, the Internal Security Operations (ISO) is properly carried out. With the intensive collaboration of other stakeholders, numbers of illegally armed groups/rebels are notably decreasing due to the Army’s successful implementation of its campaign against internal threats.

Successive encounters against the rebels and private armed groups that freed our local settlers were successfully carried out by the Army for the past years. This is manifested by the support spearheaded by the local government and other peoples’ organizations who are contented with the service of the 8ID troopers.

This resulted to the downgrade of enemy’s guerilla fronts in Leyte and Samar provinces that declined the enemy’s affectation in the whole region. Two more guerilla fronts are expected to downgrade for this quarter.

The effective implementation of ISO in Central Visayas should be taken into consideration. Cebuanos and Boholanos are now experiencing the result of having insurgent-free provinces where development is really atop.

Luzon should also be considered since the socio-economic zone from Metropolitan Manila is now extended up to the provinces of CALABARZON and in Bulacan due to degradation of terrorist rebels thru the success of the AFP’s campaign. The AFP is generally winning the battle against the rebellious group for the sake of the people.

This sweeping statement depicting the futility of the AFP in its fight against the depressive group for the sake of our people is no longer new. The AFP’s name has always been implicated in controversies in order to defame and destroy its nobility.

Although it cannot be denied that while the AFP is striving to bring forth the desired liberty of our people, there are some who are disinterested to the real aspirations of the AFP for their personal interest. The AFP is firm with their mandate of protecting our people for the benefit of the majority.

Team 8ID celebrates Christmas

Camp Lukban, Catbalogan, Samar – The Army’s 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division celebrated the birth of Christ inside camp through simple yet meaningful activities highlighted inside camp last December 1 – 25.

The series of activities were all attended by the officers, enlisted personnel, dependents and civilian employees which were personally graced by their commander, Major General Arthur I. Tabaquero who always act as father of the stormtroopers.

The “Ceremonial Switching” of Christmas lights in the command building last December 1 signaled the start of long Christmas celebration inside camp. The twinkling of lights especially at night coupled with cold breeze of the air adds more excitement to the people that Christmas is really fast approaching.

Some activities include the Catholic’s traditional “Misa de Gallo”, Day Care’s Christmas party, morning serenade, medical and dental assistance, media Christmas fellowhip, decentralized and centralized command Christmas party, gift giving, and of course Noche Buena.

It was highlighted by various children’s magic show, fun games, sports competition, carols, lantern making contest and fellowship sharing of foods.

In the line units, although they are in the frontlines confronting the terrorist who might wreak havoc in different areas especially during this yuletide season, they never forgot to celebrate the date that reminds us how faithful our God is for sending his only begotten son to wash away our sins. Simple soiree with their men and dependents joined with gift-giving were initiated by different commanders.

Christmas of team 8ID may be different to other people because most of its personnel usually celebrate Christmas with out their families. Only few soldiers live with their family inside camp that can enjoy the spirit of Christmas together. Almost all soldiers endure the taught of living away from their family for the sake of people to live in prosperity and peaceful as they celebrate Christmas.

In his message, Major General Tabaquero said to his soldiers to share the brotherhood of men because they belong to one big family in the Army. Helping, caring, and working for each other, were also emphasized by General Tabaquero in order to do the heavy tasks on their shoulders as protectors of our country and our people.

“Christmas should not only be celebrated every end of the year. We must always carry the Spirit of Christmas in our hearts and in our minds because Christmas is a way of life that upholds love, forgiveness, charity and humility in every time of the year and in every opportunity that is given us by the One who gave Christmas in our lives”, he added.

With the culmination of the series of activities, the stromtroopers had their decentralized Christmas party in the mid-day of December 19, clustering different offices and post units within the different areas inside camp. Major General Tabaquero managed to visit each cluster to at least personally greet and convey his personal message to each member of his division including the dependents and civilian employees.

Meanwhile, a centralized get-together Christmas fellowship was also conducted at 8ID covered court in the evening of December 19 as a one big happy family of stormtroopers.

With this celebration, the 8ID family celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ, our savior with its real meaning of love, charity and sharing which they believe (Stormtrooper) that they will receive the goodness of God in the next year to come more than the blessings they received in this present year.

8ID gives blood on Christmas

Every year, different places different races are excited to re-experience the joy that Christmas brings. Although it is considered as the year-ender holiday celebrated every year (of course New Year is the start of the year), Christmas is the most meaningful celebration ever. Not because of the gifts or presents, new toys for the children, bountiful foods on table, Christmas carols playing on air, parties and many more things and activities to enjoy, but because we commemorates the fulfillment of prophecy that a boy will be born by the grace of God who will save us from all of our sins through his own blood.

This Christmas, the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division family included in their list of activities a one of a kind “gift giving”, although, this could not level on to the sacrifices that our Lord Jesus Christ made when he died on the cross. This “gift” could somewhat share a life and extend hope to our brethren who are deeply in the midst of hopelessness. The 8ID gave “blood” on Christmas thru a bloodletting activity as a pre-Christmas activity.

While most of us now are very busy preparing the menus for our parties, scanning the brochures for new clothes, checking accounts for budgets, rushing shopping and preparing our long list for gift-giving, there are people who are undeniably hibernating in some corners of our busy communities who cannot afford to do the same thing what majority is doing.

Most of them are dying and badly needs blood transfusion to at least extend their life shortly if they could not sustain it for long. They are our brothers and sisters who humbly need some share of our blood to keep them see the beauty of life that God has lend us. Many of these people die because of some blood that was deprived of them that was suppose to add some more years in their lives.

With the sterling support of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) Leyte Chapter, the bloodletting activity was made possible. 150 bags of blood each having a capacity of 500cc of blood were collected out of those who volunteered which includes officers and soldiers of the division. Unlike in any other blood letting activities wherein the toughest part is to find those who are willing to donate their blood for free, PNRC proudly said, “Not in 8ID”. 8ID has been very good partner in the bloodletting activity and known to be the biggest source of blood in Region 8.

The moment where the needle is inserted into a vein on their arm is the most nerve-wracking moment of the experience. Not because of fear, but the thought of that, you become a co-creator of our Lord who help extends life. Filling up the bag with almost 500cc with blood that takes about half an hour to almost two hours depending upon the condition of the donor is another story. Some remain conscious and very alert all throughout some doze off half-way. All of them are satisfied that their little sacrifice will save hundreds of lives in the future. Almost all of them would return to donate some more once their bodies have replaced the donated blood because of the call of love to brethren.
Over-all, this simple act of charity and generosity is what makes us truly human and provide as the real meaning of Christmas in our hearts.
Christmas is definitely the most meaningful celebration ever, so why not celebrate it everyday. Let us always commemorate the fulfillment of prophecy when a boy was born by the grace of God that saved us from all of our sins through his own blood… That’s why 8ID gave blood this Christmas…
